Many contributed to jazz camp success

Thanks to all those involved in the first of what hopefully will become an annual COTA Jazz Camp held in Delaware Water Gap. Every aspect of the event was first class: the talent and character of the instructors and organizers, lunchtime concerts at the Deer Head Inn, practice and base camp space provided by the Church of the Mountain, studio time at Red Rock Recording Studio, the East Stroudsburg University library jazz collections, and the Delaware Water Gap Trolley, culminating in an evening of fine performances at the gazebo in Delaware Water Gap. The musicians and supporters of our own local jazz community continue to reach out in yet another way to enrich our area kids. Jazz is alive and well here in Monroe County!

Area jazz musicians just keep on giving, from fundraisers to passing on the torch.

The 30th anniversary of the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts will continue that tradition with organizers planning a performance, CD and DVD of music that has been more than 40 years in the making and its first week-long jazz camp for youths.

That is in addition, of course, to the annual pilgrimage of musicians to the region's mecca of jazz, the COTA jazz festival in September.

“CHILDRENS SUITE” to benefit PATH

Path has received some wonderful news. Path will receive the proceeds from the “Children’s Suite” CD and DVD.

The “Children’s Suite” was composed by Phil Woods, a Jazz Master (America’s highest honor in jazz) and recipient of the Presidents Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammy Award people). He was inspired by A. A. Milne’s book of poems Now We Are Six. After some roadblocks and 40 years later Phil has permission to record the “Children’s Suite”. This will be done in conjunction with the establishment of a local Jazz Camp and the 30th birthday of the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts (COTA).

As stated in recent PR materials. “PATH will be the beneficiary of all proceeds from the Children’s Suite”, a vibrant CD/DVD package that will both charm and teach. The founders, faculty, and supporters of the COTA CampJazz project and the “Children’s Suite” production are fully committed to PATH, believing that the precious children temporarily residing there fully deserve a new chance to find safety, security, and cultural enrichment within a caring community.”

This writer had the privilege of listening to 5 pieces of this work. It is absolutely charming and wonderful. Thank you Phil Woods and the founders, faculty, and supporters of COTA.

September 6th the “Children’s Suite” will be presented at the Sherman Theatre. We will keep you posted.
